The Asian/Pacific Studies Institute (APSI) and Duke East Asia Nexus (DEAN) are pleased to announce a new East Asian Studies Certificate (EAS) program! Beginning in Fall 2010 this certificate provides students with the opportunity for interdisciplinary, in-depth study of East Asia. Students may choose from a variety of courses in different disciplines to construct a sequence that complements their major field of study and prepares them to engage knowledgeably with East Asia in their chosen professions or graduate study.
To qualify for the certificate, students must complete an approved interdisciplinary gateway course and an approved interdisciplinary capstone seminar, fulfill the indicated language requirement, and take four additional electives, all of which must be at or above the 100 level. Also, at least two different departments must be represented overall in the courses selected, with no more than three courses counting from one single department or major.
In addition to offering courses and a certificate on completion of the requirements, APSI also sponsors lectures, films, and offers multiple scholarships for study abroad in East Asia. Undergraduates will also have the opportunity to publish their academic work for the certificate in the student run Duke East Asia Nexus Journal.
